Mississippi Tobacco-Free Coalition Program
Through Community Coalitions in each county MCEC will reach out to schools, churches, and community organizations to organize and conduct youth programs such as RAT and FREE teams, child care or Head Start Centers, and Summer Youth Programs.  In addition to these activities, Great American Smoke Out Day, Kick Butts Day, and other MCEC media sponsored campaigns will be implemented to gain youth awareness of the dangers of tobacco.  To attract the eye of parents or other adults Community Coalitions will also distribute literature promoting the State’s comprehensive smoke-free legislation.  Through these awareness activities, media attention, and Community Coalitions MCEC will make a positive change in the way that youth view smoking.

The 2011 Leadership, Engagement, and Activism development (L.E.A.D) Conference took place February 22,23,24, and 25 in Hattisburg, Greenwood, Oxford and Ridgeland, MS, respectively. This dynamic event was designed to build critical skills in 9th through 11th grade students throughout the state of Mississippi and to provide tactics and strategies to assist them in their fight against Big Tobacco. The conference was made possible by the grant from the Mississippi State Department of Health.
